Welcome to the ACOU blog!

I love what I do, and I hope you will, too. With growing my business, I am told that you must blog. Blogging is up there with having a website, posting on social media tools like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter...

My head was spinning with all the things that I "must do." I am so overwhelmed with the other "must do" things on my list, I could not see how I was going to do one more thing. Well, here is my one more thing... my first blog.

My name is Dionne Sandiford and I am the owner of A Celebration of Us!

Through my company,  I bring joy to people with my sewing and quilting talent.  I formally started my business when I left corporate America immediately after a racial incident happened to me. I could not-- and did not-- bounce back well, and I did not see any successful outcome to the situation.

I prayed to God to show me a way to make a living. I felt directed to take my sewing to the next level.  While I always accomplished my sewing as a side venture, it is now my main source of income.

A great example of what I do is one of my products, the t-shirt quilt, also known as a memory quilt. In order to create one, I take a person’s old t-shirts and turn them into a quilt. This makes a great gift and is a special way to preserve memories, especially for new graduates (high school or college), members of sororities or fraternities, sports enthusiasts, new parents, etc.  In addition, I make memory quilts and teddy bears. With these items, I take the clothing of a loved one that has passed away and I make a quilt or teddy bear from the clothing.  When the item is complete and I return it to the customer the joy and often tears that they show is so rewarding. It is like getting a virtual hug from their loved one, and a keepsake they can always treasure.

My company also accomplishes embroidery for other businesses and commercial ventures – I take their logo and stitch it out on apparel items such as shirts and hats. While this has been a tough road financially, I have made many inroads and connections with building this side of my company’s client base.

Additionally, I developed a line of greeting cards and t-shirts as well as travel accessories that I have just placed in my online store.

Recently, I made a quilt for Black Girls Rock. I could not make a financial commitment so I purchased some of the organization’s t-shirts and made a quilt, which I sent to them. See the attached picture.

Through this company, I know this is what I am meant to do – to be my own boss and, with my faith and giving honor to God, I know it is possible. I hope you will consider getting to know me and sharing this journey with me.

I'm not sure what direction this blog will take. It's mostly me, talking about my business, and sharing how I create my t-shirt quilts and other crafts. I'll focus on my journey as my business evolves. Sometimes, I just may post about something that is heavy on my heart. Having to decide how often to post, what to post about, how long it should be... all of that is enough to drive a chick crazy!

Stay tuned as I embark on a new segment of my business and its growth. Mine, too. Thanks for reading!
